A box on its own does nothing

Three identical servers behind a load balancer, and the design says nothing else about it. App server 2 dies at three in the morning. What do people using the site see?

• Nothing. The load balancer stops sending traffic to it.
• The whole site is down until the server comes back.
• Roughly a third of requests fail until somebody notices.
